Analysis of Big Brother from a Human Givens perspective

So BB9 has begun, hurrah! Now obviously I'm only watching it for professional research purposes, so on your behalf I shall be reporting on the impact of stripping away people's human givens and how this is affecting them, together with reviewing how people are dealing with issues which will no doubt crop up.
At first glance, the house looks very similar to the normal way of BB, some sumptuous places and other stripped bare, a great swimming pool, a smoking area, plus some interesting cell type rooms just to decrease the inmates level of control even further. Add to that the lack of privacy in the bathroom (and therefore anywhere), the show will no doubt bring out some interesting patterns of behaviour as everyone scrambles to meet their basic needs.
Here are some of the more interesting characters and (only based on what the show has told us at this stage) what behaviours we might start to see … why not join me in seeing if the Subrideo predictions pan out?
The couple - Mario and Lisa
To bring you up to speed - they have joined as the first couple, but as a task from BB, they have to pretend they have only just met. Mario has to pretend he is the boyfriend of pretty young Stephanie. What they don't know is that BB is going to get Mario and Stephanie married at the weekend (it will be a pretend one, but they wont know). So how will this pan out. Will Lisa handle the lack of control and attention from her partner? My guess is that Mario will go with it, but Lisa will not handle it quite as well and if her body language and constant glances don't give her away, she could well feel the need to fill the gap with someone else in the house, or will feel the need to confide in someone.
Kathreya
She went in last, but she is certainly no means least and is already my favourite (not that I have one - just doing this for professional reasons only). Kathreya seems to have quite a lot of resources to handle events in BB house and will probably be someone who people confide in. I think the only thing which she may find an issue is when she runs out of cookies.
Michael
Michael is blind and is obviously incredibly self sufficient and wont need much help, however other people's need to give attention may well land at his door. In particular, I think Rachel and Rebecca (aka Vicky Pollard) could well try to forge a relationship here, but I have a feeling Michael may push back as he does not display the same level of need to receive attention. More likely he will try to forge out the position as comic in the house.
Darnell
Darnell has obviously been through quite a lot and depending on how he has learned to handle these situations will result in how he handles it in the house.
In addition, it was mentioned that quite a few of the people have religious beliefs, so perhaps this will help them as BB strips away everything else which is familiar to them and puts them under the spotlight, although the beliefs do seem to differ, so maybe the need to be understood might be more difficult?...
So watch this space and feel free to make your own comments about what you think!

Pain management using hypnosis

Pain management using hypnosis is pretty well known these days and the stories below are great examples of it in use.
After avoiding the dentist for the best part of a decade, Leslie Mason was in pain and knew he needed urgent treatment. Two rotten teeth and four roots had to be removed but he could not afford to pay £400 for the work and was also dreading the discomfort he would have to endure. He mentioned the dilemma to his friend John Ridlington, a qualified hypnotist, who revealed he had been discussing the potential of hypnosis to a dentist he knew. A quick check confirmed Mr Mason could act as a guinea pig to test the theory and have the treatment free. He underwent a two-hour procedure without anaesthetic, remaining conscious but in a trance-like state, and reported feeling nothing more than a 'little sting'. He is believed to be the first person in the country to have major dental surgery using hypnosis instead of anaesthetic. 'It was incredible,' said Mr Mason, 54, a DIY store worker from Colchester, Essex.

Alex Lenkei, 61, from Worthing, chose to sedate himself by hypnosis before undergoing the 83-minute operation. He said he was fully aware of everything going on around him during the procedure but was free from pain. The operation at Worthing Hospital involved removing some bone in the base of the thumb and fusing some joints in an attempt to improve his arthritis.

It is important to note that the above stories are events where it was known that pain was a part of the process and could therefore be dealt with using hypnosis, but going pain free is not always advisable. Pain is ultimately a message that something is wrong in the body or mind and is there to signal to us that it needs to be sorted out. If the cause of the pain is physical then it is usually better to teach your clients how to induce hypnotic analgesia or anesthesia but not to totally remove the pain. The remaining discomfort will be a reminder that there is still something that needs to be addressed.
If the problem is primarily a mental issue then dealing with the issue directly is often the best course of action. In these cases pain can often manifest itself in very metaphorical ways. We often get people in our clinic saying things like:
"My partner is just a pain in the neck"
or
"I feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders"
They often don't link the two things together and only a few minutes ago were they telling us about how they have had a pain in their neck or shoulders ever since their problem started. These are the golden nuggets to look for while talking to your clients about the pain they may be suffering.
If you are working with your clients to reduce or manage pain then there are a number of techniques that you can use. These are all very metaphorical and work amazingly while under hypnosis. Try out one of these or even better layer them for even greater effect:
Pain displacement or Pain transference: the pain can be moved from its site to an insignificant place in the body like an earlobe where it can be modified and reduced.
Glove anesthesia: one of the hands is made numb and then that numbness is applied to the painful site as it leaves the hand. The numbness may be induced by the suggestion that the hand is submerged in a bucket of ice water.
The control room: the client imagines an control room in their mind where they have dials and leavers for all the feelings and sensations in the body. You suggest to your client that they turn the dial for their pain response to a manageable level.
A special place: take your client to a place and a time where they were feeling good, energised, and pain free.

Kirsten Dunst reveals depression battle

Spider-Man actress Kirsten Dunst has revealed she checked into rehab earlier this year to be treated for depression.
Source - BBC Website
Kirsten Dunst revealing that she has suffered from depression may come as a surprise for some people. It is very easy to think that someone like Kirsten who appears to 'have it all' couldn't possibly suffer from something like that.
On our Understanding and Beating Depression course we teach our students that depression is very much linked to thinking styles and Human Givens. This means that even though it may appear that some aspects of peoples lives are 'perfect' the reality for that person may be totally different. We obviously cannot comment on what may have caused Kirsten's depression but given her busy filming schedule and potential time away from home and family it is easy to see how some of her human givens are not being met.
Overall, Kirsten talking about depression is a good thing as this raises the profile of this debilitating condition. There are more and more people being diagnosed and even more who are never diagnosed. There is an urgent need around the world for people who can effectively and quickly lift depression.

Case Study For Public Speaking using Solution Focused Brief Therapy, NLP, EFT and Hypnotherapy

A new case study has been uploaded to The Subrideo Network. This was one of my clients, who came to see me for Public Speaking issues. I utilised Solution Focused Therapy, NLP, Hypnotherapy and some EFT.
Why not take a look at the case study on The Subrideo Network and comment on the case, giving any alternate ways it could have been handled, or if you are seeing someone for a similar issue, you may get some ideas as to how you could deal with it, from the case study and people's comments. Here's a small section from the case study, so you can see if it's one you would be interested in reading more about:
Client presented with “Fear of Public Speaking”.
Had some non problem talk and client seemed to have no human givens issues.
From discussing the pattern with the client and trying to find exceptions, it was clear that it was specific types of presentations which caused her the most fear. Some presentations, where it included some element of conversation with the audience she felt fine in, it was only those where she had to start cold and there was no interaction.
We discussed whether she had the flexibility within her role to have some element of conversation within the presentation, however this was not possible for some cases. In particular, there was a large presentation coming up which she knew she would have to do without conversing with the audience.
We discussed other times when she had to do similar things in her past and she stated that she used to sing as a child in front of large groups and really loved it. We walked about this a lot and I complimented her on this....
